Gallup, the public opinion polling agency, has announced that it will stop tracking presidential approval ratings after nearly 90 years. A spokesperson confirmed this, according to reports. This came as U.S. President Donald Trump continued to scrutinize polling of his popularity. However, Gallup has insisted the decision is based on their “goals and priorities.”
Gallup announces shut down of tracking Presidential approval rating
The public opinion polling agency Gallup has been in business for nearly 90 years. The company recently announced it will stop tracking presidential approval ratings. This comes as the trend of American President Donald Trump criticizing polling companies and media houses. This is also accompanied by the President’s alleged tendency to blast reports about unfavorable numbers.
However, Gallup has confirmed that its decision was “solely based on Gallup’s research goals and priorities”. According to The Guardian, after 88 years, the company has declared that it would cease all operations of measuring the ratings of political figures.
A spokesperson for the company told multiple news outlets, “Our commitment is to long-term, methodologically sound research on issues and conditions that shape people’s lives.” The spokesperson added, “That work will continue through the Gallup Poll Social Series, the Gallup Quarterly Business Review, the World Poll, and our portfolio of US and global research.”
The rating is among the most widely cited measures of public opinion on any President’s performance. Donald Trump’s 36% approval in December was among the lowest ever recorded by the company. The President started his term at around 47%, but has since fallen significantly.
Donald Trump has repeatedly criticized polling organizations and media companies that have shared unfavorable ratings about him. The U.S. President wrote on Truth Social, “The Times Siena Poll, which is always tremendously negative to me, especially just before the Election of 2024, where I won in a Landslide, will be added to my lawsuit against The Failing New York Times.”
