Stellan Skarsgård Explains Dangers of Giving Parenting Advice To Kids

Stellan Skarsgård has some parenting advice to share with fellow parents and grandparents, which may alter everyone’s perspective and relationship with their children. While sharing the fatherly wisdom he has gained from raising eight children, the 74-year-old revealed why it is ‘dangerous’ to give parenting advice to one’s own kids.

The Mamma Mia! actor also shared that he has chosen to take a hands-off approach, letting his kids figure things out in their own way and at their own time.

Stellan Skarsgård on why he doesn’t give his children parenting advice

Stellan Skarsgård thinks it’s dangerous to give parenting advice to children, and he has a pretty straightforward reason to justify his stance. The Chernobyl actor believes that while he’ll get the credit if his kids succeed after taking his advice, he will also be the one to blame if they fail.

In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE at the Los Angeles premiere of Sentimental Value on November 5, Skarsgård shared, “I haven’t given them any advice at all because it is very dangerous to do.” He justified saying, “Because if they listen to my advice and they’re successful, it’s because of me, and if they listen to my advice and they’re not successful, it’s my fault. So it’s a lose-lose situation.”

Stellan Skarsgård is father to Alexander, Gustaf, Sam, Bill, Eija, Valter, Ossian, and Kolbjörn. The first six children of the Swedish actor are from his first marriage to My Skarsgård. Stellan married Megan Everett-Skarsgård in 200 following his divorce from My in 2007. The couple welcomed Ossian in 2009 and Kolbjörn in 2012.

Six of Stellan’s eight children have followed in his footsteps and made their mark in the entertainment industry. Meanwhile, four of them, Alexander, 49, Gustaf, 44, Bill, 35, and Eija, 33, have already made him a granddad.

Stellan’s approach to parenting seems to be working out just fine. His kids are figuring out parenthood on their own terms while Stellan gets to enjoy being a fun grandpa to his eight grandkids. A win-win situation for everyone, isn’t it?
