In a video that has been going viral across social media platforms since October 25, a lion-like figure is seen roaming the woods around Mountshannon, County Clare, a coastal village situated on the banks of Ireland‘s Lough Derg lake. The viral clip naturally caused unrest among the locals. Many took to social media to express their shock and concern. Much to the relief of the residents, the local police have solved the looming mystery behind the massive ‘lion’.
Massive ‘lion’ featured in viral video is actually a dog
A mysterious creature spotted near Ireland’s County Clare sparked widespread concern and numerous speculations among the locals and viewers worldwide. The video in question was taken from the driver’s seat of a car. The viral clip featured a massive, golden-brown animal with a distinctive furry tail taking a stroll in the woods near Mountshannon. The driver even honked to get its attention and a better view of the creature, but to no avail.
However, the alleged dangerous creature is the opposite of what people were assuming it to be. The supposedly ferocious “lion” is actually a friendly Newfoundland dog named Mouse. Mouse’s trendy lion-like haircut was what instigated the viral misunderstanding that went global.
Ireland National Police shared the news through their official X account with the caption, “Mystery solved! Turns out the ‘lion’ spotted roaming Clare was just a Newfoundland dog with a fresh haircut!”
The revelation triggered a chain of hilarious reactions around social media. People couldn’t stop laughing over the fact that they were actually stressing about a dog that appeared to look like a lion.
“Let’s face it, I think his owner was being a bit mischievous. A less usual colour for a Newfoundland, and a convincingly lion-like appearance in size, colour, hair-distribution – below my own pic of a healthy lion in Namibia”, one comment read. “Oh my god why would you give a Newfoundland such a bad haircut? “another user wrote. “The Mouse That Roared”, another funny comment said.
