Ego Nwodim discusses her SNL exit
In a recent interview on Sherri Shepherd‘s talk show, Ego Nwodim opened up about leaving Saturday Night Live after seven seasons. She explained the reasons behind her departure and discussed the show’s impact on her creative journey.
“It’s like being in a marriage,” Nwodim began. “I’ve never done it before, but that show was my longest relationship ever. I’m not a commitment-phobe, but I heard when you’re married, you get the seven-year itch. And it’s like, ‘I wanna date other people! I wanna see some other privates!'”
The actress shared that she is now “excited for the future” and is ready to “explore other opportunities.” She noted, “I truly did learn so much there, and I had so much fun. I miss my colleagues, but it felt like the time to make space for something else for me.”
Sherri Shepherd observed that Ego Nwodim’s exit meant that there would be no black woman left in the cast of SNL. The host asked the actress if she felt “the weight of all of that representation.” The comedienne replied, “I don’t know that I would call it weight. I felt honored to be the seventh Black woman in that cast.”
Nwodim added, “I hope that there will be more Black women. Punkie Johnson came on the show after me. Who knows who else they’ll find as they explore and seek out other talents, but I felt honored to represent for us.”
The 37-year-old concluded, “And I do believe I represented a myriad of characters, different types of characters — some people didn’t always catch that nuance, but I do feel like I got the chance to represent and that was really important to me.”
Following her SNL departure, Ego Nwodim is all set to star in Mindy Kaling’s upcoming Hulu comedy show Not Suitable for Work. (via Variety)
