‘It Really Took a Dump-Ski’: Jack Black on His Unaired SNL Sketch

Jack Black recently discussed a Saturday Night Live sketch that never aired. The actor and comic, who has hosted SNL multiple times, discussed the cut piece, called “Boys Night Out.”

During an appearance on Late Night With Seth Meyers, he described how the sketch was written for him by Amy Poehler. He tried to sell it on stage, but the show ultimately pulled it after dress rehearsal.

Jack Black said the sketch was “bespoke” and written for him by Amy Poehler. He had asked to do it as a short song. The actor then performed the hook on Seth Meyers’ show. He sang, “‘Boys night out / Boys night out / Now we’re really rockin’ / And the chicks are all a-squawkin’ / ‘Cause we’re talking ‘bout a boys night out!’”

He described the story, saying it was about “a guy who was very excited because his wife was going out for the day and he was gonna have a boys’ night out” with his friends.

Jack Black recalled that the song landed well with Meyers’ studio audience, but that it did not go over during SNL’s dress rehearsal. “And I thought it was funny, but then, in the dress, it really took a dump-ski. And it was like… It’s out,” Black said, noting he agreed with SNL creator Lorne Michaels’ decision to cut it.

Meyers praised Black’s commitment to the material. He said watching the actor try to sell the sketch even after it had failed in dress rehearsal was impressive. Black answered jokingly, “I’ve only got one gear! As anyone who knows me knows, I go all the way.”

Amy Poehler has also spoken about the Saturday Night Live sketch. On her Good Hang podcast, she said she and Emily Spivey wrote “Boys Night Out.” She revealed it played out as Black waiting for friends who never arrived, and he just continuously ordered wings.
