Mayor of Kingstown Co-Creator Reveals Why Ian Hides Iris’ Death From Mike in Season 4

Mayor of Kingstown Season 4 is here, and Jeremy Renner’s Mike McLusky is still oblivious to the tragic death of Iris. However, it is because Ian Ferguson, one of Mike’s most trusted allies, has chosen not to disclose Iris’ fate to his boss. While many have questioned Ian’s decision-making as a result, actor Hugh Dillon, who also serves as the co-creator of Paramount’s hit crime thriller series, is clear about why his character chose to keep such a crucial piece of information from the show’s protagonist.

Hugh Dillon says Ian is ‘protecting Mike’ by keeping Iris’ death a secret in Mayor of Kingstown Season 4

In a recent interview with TV Insider, Dillon explained that Ian decided not to tell Mike about Iris’ death in the Mayor of Kingstown Season 4 premiere as the influential power broker already had enough on his plate, especially following the recent arrest of his brother, Kyle.

“Well, we just thought at the time he was overwhelmed with Kyle and with all the rest of his work, and I think that he had so little to hold on to. The thing is, with Ian, as he looks at Mike, he always thinks he knows better. He thinks he’s protecting Mike from his blind spots. And, I mean, Ian is not some emotional calculating genius, but in his world, he feels that it’s best if Mike doesn’t know. All Ian’s ever doing is trying to help,” Dillon remarked.

In Mayor of Kingstown Season 4 Episode 1, Ian receives a report about an anonymous death from Stevie (Derek Webster) and quickly deduces that the deceased is actually Iris. However, he instantly decides not to tell Mike about it by saying that he’ll deal with the ordeal himself. Notably, Iris’ death occurred in the Season 3 finale, when she passed away from an accidental overdose.

Dillon shared a similar sentiment about Ian keeping Iris’ death a secret with Us Weekly at the Mayor of Kingstown Season 4 red carpet premiere, stating that he may reveal the truth to Mike “way down the road.” He also added, “I envisioned that death for her. I talked to her about it. I also really love the sin of omission with Ian not telling Mike. Ian’s trying to help him,” before reinstating that Ian always “looks after [Mike’s] best interests.”

Mayor of Kingstown Season 4 premieres new episodes every other Sunday.
