The Young Sheldon spinoff, Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage, has already got fans wondering when the inevitable divorce — first hinted at in Young Sheldon — will happen. Showrunner Steve Holland did address this looming question.
Steve Holland on when Georgie and Mandy will divorce in the CBS sitcom
Steve Holland says the writers haven’t set a timeline yet. When asked if he knew when the divorce would happen, he told Deadline, “I don’t.” “We know some things that are floating out there. It’s not like how it was with Young Sheldon… We know some things that are going to happen in the story of Georgie, but we don’t know when.”
According to Holland, this uncertainty gives the creative team more freedom to develop the relationship naturally. “The fact that you know it’s gonna happen is a like a sword hanging over their relationship,” he explained, adding, “You don’t know when, but you know at some point it’s gonna drop.”
For now, the show seems less focused on when Georgie and Mandy’s marriage ends, and more on how they handle being young parents trying to make it work. Season 2 opens with new tension at the tire store. After Jim McAllister (Will Sasso) retires, Georgie (Montana Jordan) and Ruben (Jessie Prez) struggle to run the business together. Their clashing personalities, aka Georgie’s overconfidence versus Ruben’s cautious nature, create some of the season’s biggest laughs and most frustrating moments.
“We realized that it was tricky to keep Ruben and the store fully integrated into the story,” Steve Holland explained. “That was part of our thinking behind having Ruben and Georgie buy the store together. We could bring those two worlds together so it wasn’t just a satellite story,” he further stated.
Between business hassles, jealousy issues, and career ambitions, Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage continues to show their story even as fans brace for the heartbreak they know is coming.
