Chrysler Recalls Another 112,000 Jeeps Over Possible ‘Catastrophic Engine Failure’

A new recall impacting thousands of Jeeps has been issued over a serious engine problem that could lead to a vehicle fire or “unexpected” loss of power. A report from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) states that nearly 112,859 Jeeps could have the defect. The recall affects various models of Jeep plug-in hybrids made within the last three years, the 2023-2025 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4XE (about 37,000 units) and the 2024-2025 Jeep Wrangler 4XE (about 76,000 units). This comes off the heels of two other significant recalls for Chrysler and Stellantis over their Jeep vehicles in the same month.

Thousands of Jeeps recalled for the third time in the same month

The issue with the two Jeep plug-in hybrids stems from their engines as they “may be contaminated with sand from the casting process,” as noted by the NHTSA report published on November 6, 2025.

This sand “can contaminate internal engine components, leading to a catastrophic engine failures,” the notice continues, “which can result in a vehicle fire or an unexpected and unrecoverable loss of propulsion.”

A vehicular fire can increase the risk of injury to occupants and damage surrounding property, while a sudden loss of power increases the risk of a crash “without prior warning.”

As of October 20, the automaker is aware of numerous reports potentially related to this issue, including 36 fires and 50 loss of propulsion field reports, 144 warranty claims, and 50 other service records. It is also aware of 3 injuries that could be connected to this recall for all markets.

Stellantis discovered the issue in May 2025 and found after several months of investigation that there was period of time between June 2023 and March 2024 where the engine block supplier did not properly clean the engines during the casting process.

Customers who own the affected Jeeps can identify the issue prior to catastrophic failure by listening for a knocking noise from the engine or looking out for the malfunction indicator lamp.

Stellantis is still working on a remedy for the situation. Dealers have been notified of the recall on November 13, the same day that the VIN numbers for the affected Jeeps became searchable. Owners will be receive an interim notification from December 29 to 31.
