Over 1 Million Toyota, Lexus & Subaru Cars Recalled Over Camera Defect

A recall of more than 1 million Toyota vehicles, which includes Lexus and Subaru cars, has been issued due to a camera flaw that causes it to freeze. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) released the safety recall report on the issue on October 30, 2025 and states that 1,024,407 vehicles have been affected in the United States. The defect stems from a software error of the Panoramic View Monitor system that can make the camera image to freeze or go blank while the vehicle is in reverse. This reduces the driver’s view behind the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.

It should be noted that this recall only covers the listed vehicles sold in the United States, though many have been purchased outside of the country.

The vehicles above are equipped with the Parking Assist ECU, which is a component part of the Panoramic View Monitor system. The software in the ECU can cause “the rearview image to freeze briefly during the backing event if reverse is selected within a specific time after ignition is turned on” or “the rearview image not to display on the next ignition on if the ignition is turned on and off within a specific time.” This means that the system doesn’t comply with federal rear visibility requirements.

Toyota first discovered the issue in April 2024 and began testing the PVM system for around eight months until December 2024. The company then continued testing to confirm the camera interruptions for another ten months until October 2025, which is partly why the recall has taken such a long time since initial testing.

According to the NHTSA, letters notifying affected owners of the safety risk are expected to be mailed by December 16, 2025, with additional letters to be sent once a remedy is available.

Those who have purchased an affected vehicle are urged to return it back to the dealer, which will update the Parking Assist ECU software free of charge. If the owner has already paid to have this error remedied, they can seek reimbursement through Toyota’s General Reimbursement Plan. Subaru has a separate reimbursement plan.

Customers can contact Toyota’s customers service for more information. Toyota’s numbers for the recall are 25TB13 and 25LB06, while Subaru’s is WRE25.

This past week has seen several recalls that have impacted a large number of vehicles. This includes one for over 300,000 Jeeps due to a faulty battery that can lead to a fire and another for ten popular models of Ford and Lincoln vehicles due to a moonroof defect.
