Just days after reports surfaced that Anne Hathaway passed on a villain role in Spider-Man 4, the Oscar-winning actress is reportedly circling a major part in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s upcoming Phase 7.
Anne Hathaway could appear in Marvel’s Mutant Saga
Known scooper MyTimeToShineHello posted on X (formerly Twitter), “After rejecting a role in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Anne Hathaway is now in talks for a MAJOR role in the MCU’s next saga.”
The report comes as Marvel Studios prepares to transition into its Mutant Saga following Avengers: Secret Wars in 2027. While the studio has not confirmed any casting, the rumor positions Hathaway for a major role in the franchise’s X-Men-focused future.
The Spider-Man role Hathaway declined was part of early casting discussions for the upcoming Spider-Man 4. According to industry insider Jeff Sneider, both Hathaway and Sarah Snook were approached for a female antagonist role.
“Those were like legit rumours, and I’d heard that basically Anne Hathaway passed, and… Sarah Snook passed,” Sneider said. He added that the original concept involved “the older female villain,” but following the passes, “maybe they rewrote it, made it a smaller part, got an older man to play it instead.”
Marvel Studios is expected to launch its Mutant Saga centered on the X-Men. According to a report from ComicBookMovie, the Mutant Saga will largely revolve around Scott Summers, also known as Cyclops, and the extended Summers family. This would likely bring characters like Jean Grey, Alex Summers (Havok), and Vulcan (Gabriel Summers) into focus, with potential introductions of classic X-Men villains like Mister Sinister down the line.
Marvel Studios has yet to comment on the reports, and casting negotiations remain in flux. With Thunderbolts* director Jake Schreier already attached to helm an MCU X-Men film, official announcements regarding Phase 7’s roster are likely in the months ahead.
