Christian Bale is promoting his latest film, The Bride!, but a recent interview brought attention back to one of his earliest roles in Newsies. The star actor spoke openly about whether he would ever return to the musical genre.
Christian Bale shares if he would ever return in a musical role
While talking about his new film, Christian Bale suddenly found himself revisiting one of his old roles in Newsies. A reporter mentioned that a moment in The Bride! had a bit of movement that briefly felt like a musical scene. Bale laughed at the comparison and said he never expected anyone to connect those two films.
Bale called the idea funny but quickly cleared things up. According to him, the difference is pretty obvious. Newsies is a full-on musical, while The Bride! definitely isn’t. “I would never have thought anybody would relate Newsies to The Bride! that’s hysterical,” Bale said. “But wait, big difference. Newsies is a musical. This is not a musical,” he added (via PEOPLE).
Christian Bale later explained the scene that led to the comparison. He said the moment is not a polished dance sequence. Instead, it shows a sudden explosion of raw physical energy. Bale described it as a “ridiculously energetic expression, with possession,” adding that the scene will make more sense once viewers watch the entire film.
Even though he had some fun filming it back in the day, Bale said he’s probably done with musicals for good. The actor admitted he doesn’t see himself “stepping foot in a musical again in my life.” Still, he left the tiniest door open, adding that you should “never say never,” though in this case it’s pretty close to never.
Bale first stepped into the spotlight with Newsies more than 30 years ago. The film hit theaters in April 1992 and featured a cast that included Robert Duvall and Bill Pullman. These days, Bale is back on the big screen with the horror-sci-fi flick The Bride!. The film teams him up with Jessie Buckley, Peter Sarsgaard, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Penélope Cruz. Bale plays Frankenstein’s monster in the movie, and his performance has already picked up strong praise from audiences.
