Barack Obama Says Fair Elections Are ‘Under Attack’

Former President Barack Obama has taken to social media to convey that the Republicans have jeopardized the integrity of fair elections to further their position in the upcoming midterms. The first African American to hold office in the White House, Obama claimed that elections are currently “under attack” and encouraged Virginians to side in favor of a Democratic redistricting plan in the upcoming voting session.

On March 5, the 64-year-old Democrat posted a clip on social media, calling out Donald Trump’s move to redistrict congressional maps in order to secure a better result in the 2026 midterms.

“Free and fair elections are the cornerstone of our democracy. But right now, they’re under attack,” said Barack Obama in the X (formerly Twitter) video. “Over the past year, several Republican-controlled states have taken the unprecedented step of redrawing their congressional maps in the middle of the decade. And they’ve done it for a simple reason — to give themselves an unfair advantage in the midterms this fall.”

“In April, Virginians can respond by making sure your voting power is not diminished by what the Republicans are doing in other states,” Obama added.

The row started when the Texas Governor sanctioned a Republican-leaning House map, drawing a similar reaction from the California Democrats. In accordance, Virginia Democrats also released a new congressional map, only for a state judge to block the move due to a Republican National Committee-led lawsuit. As such, a redistricting referendum will take place to settle the matter, with April 21 to serve as election day (via Newsweek).

Further stating that the election for Virginia’s new congressional map would “help level the playing field,” Barack Obama urged residents to opt ‘Yes’ as “voters will have the final say over what the map looks like.” He assured that it is a “temporary measure” and that a bipartisan redistricting committee would redraw the maps after the 2030 consensus.

“We can’t afford two more years of unchecked power and zero accountability in Washington. Help us chart a better path forward,” Obama said in conclusion.
