Fans of Chicago P.D. finally saw Hailey Upton, played by Tracy Spiridakos, and Jay Halstead, played by Jesse Lee Soffer, reunite during the recent One Chicago crossover. The meeting marked the first time the former couple shared scenes together in years. Now, showrunner Gwen Sigan has addressed whether their emotional reunion has opened the door for a possible reconciliation.
Will Upton and Halstead get back together in Chicago PD?
The crossover storyline pulled Hailey Upton and Jay Halstead back to Chicago during a high-stakes investigation. Hailey, now serving as an FBI agent in Detroit, returned to the city while working a narco-trafficking probe linked to a passenger jet. Trouble escalated when the plane suddenly lost contact mid-flight. Upton then reached out to both the Chicago Police Department and the Chicago Fire Department for backup.
Her visit was not only about the investigation. Upton had also learned that Jay had his undercover cover blown. She rushed in to help keep him safe. Their paths crossed again when Halstead saved her life while chasing down a lead. It marked the first time the former Intelligence Unit partners had faced each other since their tough breakup.
While speaking with Soaps.com, Sigan revealed that the two characters had been out of touch for a long time. She stated, “They haven’t seen each other in years. They probably haven’t spoken in years. The last time was definitely through letters and voicemails and texts. So this is the first time we’re really getting to see them back together. There’s just so much unsaid.”
The episode finally puts them in the same room again. Halstead admits he chose to stay in Chicago during the investigation because Upton was there.
Upton makes her own confession. Part of the reason she returned was him, too. Halstead also apologizes for walking away and for how their relationship ended. He admits the job and the city changed him. He tells Upton he is sorry for letting that happen. Upton responded with her own apology before suggesting they grab a drink.
Sigan says the moment serves as “a moment of sort of catharsis” for both characters. They finally clear the air and admit where things went wrong. This led fans to wonder if it means a romantic reunion is on the horizon. Sigan does not rule it out. She calls the moment an “open door.” “I think the fact that Upton’s even offering it, and then that he accepts it so readily, means that there’s going to be more conversations and just more hope for the two of them moving forward. I think possibility is what I take out of it,” the showrunner added.
Now it remains to be seen if the duo patches things up and gets back together.
