Kevin James Feared His Career Was Over After Seeing First Cut of 1 Hit Film

Kevin James reflected on his experience of watching his 2009 film, Paul Blart: Mall Cop, for the first time and how Adam Sandler played an essential role in improving it. He revealed that when he first saw the movie, he found the initial cut to be poor and believed his film career was “over.” However, Sandler stepped in, reviewed the cut, and made the necessary changes, making it releasable, and it went on to earn $186 million at the box office.

Kevin James talks about Paul Blart: Mall Cop

During an episode of The Drew Barrymore Show, James discussed Paul Blart: Mall Cop with the host, revealing how Sandler helped him improve the movie, which he described as “horrendous” when he first watched it. Barrymore then reflected on her experience working with Sandler, noting that “he’s a great collaborator.” Responding to her, James added, “Everything he does, I listen, I mean, I just follow him.”

James further said, “And he saved — he made my movie, Mall Cop. I would never have gotten that made; he made it.” Sandler was the producer on the 2009 film alongside Jack Giarraputo, Kevin James, Todd Garner, and Barry Bernardi. After shooting and editing the film, James revealed that he saw the first cut and found it unpleasant. At the time, he panicked, believing that his career was “over.”

But Sandler stepped in as a savior, asked him to relax, reviewed the cut, and improved the areas of the movie where needed. “Adam goes, ‘Relax, buddy, let me check it out.’ He looked at it. He let areas breathe, and he just knew what to do with it, and he made the movie that it was, and it came in like, you know, it was just amazing, incredible,” he added.

Directed by Steve Carr, the comedy-action movie follows Paul, a mild-mannered cop and single father who is required to save the day when a gang of organised criminals, dressed up as Santa, takes over the mall.
