Netflix’s New Agatha Christie Thriller Show Isn’t Liked by Many Critics

Agatha Christie Seven Dials Rotten Tomatoes scores are now in, and the newly released Netflix murder mystery has opened to a modest critical reception following its debut.

Agatha Christie’s Seven Dials reviews lead to unimpressive Rotten Tomatoes score

Adapted from a 1929 novel by Agatha Christie, Agatha Christie’s Seven Dials premiered this week on Netflix and currently holds a 62% Tomatometer score on Rotten Tomatoes. The series positions itself as a glossy period mystery filled with high society intrigue, but critics remain divided on the platform about whether it delivers the sharp suspense Christie fans expect.

Daniel Fienberg of The Hollywood Reporter writes, “Here, the journey isn’t necessarily thrilling, nor is it as intellectually adroit as peak Sherlock, but it’s lively and easygoing entertainment.” Others were less convinced. Lucy Mangan of The Guardian commented, “Retro without flair and full of modern concerns about everyone’s emotional wellbeing is a mix that doesn’t work for me.” Some reviewers found the series more enjoyable if viewed without strict expectations.

Anita Singh from The Daily Telegraph (UK) wrote, “If you have neither read the original book nor care about the changes, this is a diverting three-parter. Christie purists may feel differently.” Aramide Tinubu of Variety added, “While the story itself may have been stronger in a film format, the performances by Freeman, Bonham Carter and McKenna-Bruce are enticing enough to keep the viewer engaged.” Meanwhile, David Caballero of Collider was more critical, calling it “Too slow to be riveting and too needlessly drawn out.”

Set in 1925 England, Agatha Christie’s Seven Dials happens during a grand country house party at Chimneys, the estate of Lord Caterham. A practical joke involving eight alarm clocks spirals into tragedy when guest Gerry Wade is found dead the next morning, with only seven clocks ticking nearby. As panic spreads, Lady Eileen “Bundle” Brent begins investigating a conspiracy that reaches far beyond the estate, involving international spies and a secretive group known as the Seven Dials.
