Here’s Why PBS News Weekend Got Canceled ‘for the Foreseeable Future’

The iconic PBS News Weekend, which has been around for over a decade now, has been canceled, with January 11, 22026, being the final broadcast for the foreseeable future. Instead, PBS will air the weekly show, Horizons. It is a show on science and technology issues, on Saturdays. The other show to air would be Compass Points, which is on foreign affairs, on Sundays.

John Yang explains why PBS News Weekend was canceled

On Sunday, January 11, 2026, PBS News Weekend aired its final episode for the foreseeable future. The show has been canceled. It happened due to “the loss of federal funding for public media.” This comes as per anchor John Yang.

“As you may know, this is the last broadcast of PBS News Weekend, at least for the foreseeable future,” Yang said about the show that he anchored since 2022 (via PEOPLE). “We’re grateful that you’ve chosen us over the years as the place to get news on Saturdays and Sundays,” the veteran host added.

On Friday, January 9, 2026, shortly before the final episode aired, co-anchors Amna Nawaz and Geoff Bennett made an announcement on PBS NewsHour. They revealed that PBS had canceled the weekend edition of the long-running show, PBS News Weekend. “Due to federal budget cuts, we’ve had to make the difficult decision to rework our staffing and programming, and this Sunday, our PBS News Weekend team will sign off the air,” Nawaz said.

John Yang joined them on PBS NewsHour, where Nawaz told him, “John, we’re going to miss you so, so much.” She further added, “Thank you does not even begin to cover it. You and your team have done incredible storytelling and covered major breaking news every weekend.”

Bennett added to this, “Weekend after weekend, you and the team brought such rigor and care and heart to the stories you covered. You will be deeply missed, and we are deeply grateful for all of your work.”

Yang went on to give a shoutout to his “small but mighty team.” Moreover, he added, “We’re proud of the creativity, the dedication they brought to each and every segment.”

PBS News Weekend’s cancellation comes after Donald Trump issued an executive order in May 2025. The order was to halt federal funding for PBS.
