Tracker Season 3 Episode 9, also the mid-season finale, ended on a harrowing note, making viewers wonder whether a key character died.

The episode’s ending saw Colter Shaw (Justin Hartley) driving a badly wounded Keaton (Brent Sexton) to the hospital, only for their car to get shot, swerve off the road, and flip. Before viewers could see what happened to the pair, the episode ended, leaving their fates uncertain. Now, showrunner Elwood Reid has addressed Keaton’s fate in the series.
Elwood Reid clarifies Keaton’s fate in Tracker Season 3 Episode 9
In a recent interview with TV Insider, Elwood Reid revealed Keaton was going to die in Tracker Season 3 Episode 9, titled “Good Trouble,” as the creatives had decided to kill him. However, he added that fans would find out Keaton’s fate when the show returns on March 1, 2026.
“We went in there, we were going to kill him, but you’ll see what ends up happening. But it was an interesting thing because we did want a cliffhanger. But we knew it would be kind of BS to just have a cliffhanger with Colter in danger,” he stated.
The showrunner continued, stating that Colter was “extremely injured” and was also shot, which fans would find out in Episode 10. “So it’s one of those things where we played with all the different ideas,” he added. “And Colter does something heroic in the top of 10 to get themselves out of that situation. But yeah, it was fun playing because it’s funny, you talk about Keaton.”
Reid stressed that he and the creatives often discussed Keaton, noting how viewers liked the character due to his and Colter’s mutual experience at a “really dark, weird place.”
He also said that they explored the idea of having Keaton work as an investigator for Fiona Rene’s Reenie Greene. “That’s why we had that phone call in the beginning,” he continued. “So he’s just this guy that’s never left our conversation in the writers’ room.”
In Tracker Season 3 Episode 9, Keaton and Colter work together to find the former’s missing partner. Consequently, they stumble into a conspiracy involving buried bodies on a farm, crime bosses, and more sinister things. The pair subsequently encounters an assassin, resulting in Keaton getting shot. Colter drives the injured Keaton to a hospital, begging him to hang on. However, someone takes a shot at their car, likely leaving the pair with critical injuries.
