For Kim Cattrall, the craft of acting isn’t just a job; it’s a profound, life-affirming passion that she now ranks above sex and drugs. The iconic actor, best known for her role as Samantha Jones in Sex and the City, recently opened up about her artistic journey.
Kim Cattrall says acting is ‘better than any drug or any sexual climactic experience’
Speaking at the Tribeca Festival Lisboa, the Sex and the City star opened up about her early struggles and eventual love for acting. Cattrall recalled that after leaving the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York City, “To go out to the real world, where people could say no, was terrifying to me.”
Before she became synonymous with Samantha Jones, Cattrall faced a string of auditions for roles she found limiting. “I was so disappointed that they were asking so little of me, other than to cry or to be hurt or emotionally unstable or drunk,” she said. Coming from a theater background, where strong female characters were common, these early experiences were disheartening. Still, the actress learned to turn rejection into resilience.
Now, decades into her career, Cattrall has not only made peace with the ups and downs of the profession but has come to embrace it with deep passion. “I love my job. I love it. It’s difficult, it’s complicated, but when it goes well, it’s so satisfying,” she said.
That satisfaction, she revealed, can feel almost transcendent. “You have a dream of doing this profession and working with people who have the highest point in their evolution, and to be part of that, it’s better than any drug or any sexual climactic experience,” Cattrall declared. Looking ahead, the actress said she wants to focus on joy and curiosity in whatever time she has left on screen and off.
