French authorities arrest 5 more suspects in Louvre museum heist
According to BBC, French authorities have arrested five more suspects in the Louvre Heist. Public prosecutor Laure Beccuau stated that they were detained on Wednesday, October 29, in Paris during extensive police raids.
One of the four suspects is believed to be part of the group that carried out the heist in the Apollo Gallery on October 19. The police are questioning the newly apprehended suspects of Louvre heist. Their exact roles and the extent of their involvement in the robbery are not yet known.
Beccuau revealed to French radio station RTL that the suspects “may eventually inform us about how the incident took place.” The public prosecutor also mentioned that the five suspects were arrested in Paris and the Seine-Saint-Denis suburb.
Notably, the five Louvre suspects can be held in custody for only four days before being charged or released due to a lack of solid evidence. As a result, investigators are thoroughly examining encrypted messages on the suspects’ phones to substantiate proof against them.
Public prosecutor Beccuau also shared that one suspect’s DNA may be linked to the crime scene. She stated, “We had him in our sights,” careful not to divulge more details.
Furthermore, Beccuau remarked that the five Louvre heist suspects could be connected to “other elements of the case.” French authorities suspect that a larger criminal gang is responsible for the October 19 heist.
Previously, French authorities arrested two suspects on Saturday, October 25, at Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris. One suspect was attempting to escape to Algeria, while the other was trying to fly out to Mali, West Africa. Both suspects are French nationals from Seine-Saint-Denis, the area under investigation.
Experts estimate the jewels are worth $102 million. Unfortunately, French authorities have not recovered the stolen loot yet.
