Why Patrick John Flueger Has Stepped Back From Chicago PD

Chicago P.D. star Patrick John Flueger is taking an unexpected leave of absence from the NBC drama. The actor’s sudden exit has sparked concern amongst fans, with many curious about his character’s future in the show. However, as per a recent report, he has stepped away to deal with a personal matter.

Is Patrick John Flueger permanently leaving Chicago PD?

Chicago P.D. star Patrick John Flueger is reportedly taking a temporary leave of absence from the NBC drama. It has sparked speculation among fans about his future on the series. The actor, who has portrayed Officer Adam Ruzek since 2014, is stepping away to address a personal matter, as reported by Deadline. Sources also confirmed that his exit is not permanent and that he is expected to return later in the current season.

According to the outlet, Flueger’s exit was unplanned. This has prompted writers to adjust story lines and modify upcoming episodes to reflect Ruzek’s absence. Insiders also said that the actor has been navigating a challenging period in his personal life, which included an incident involving alcohol use on set.

This isn’t the first time the Chicago franchise has given its cast time off for personal reasons. Previously, Chicago Fire star Taylor Kinney similarly took time off from filming in 2023 before returning months later.

Since the series premiered in 2014, Flueger’s Adam Ruzek has been a key figure within the Intelligence Unit led by Sergeant Hank Voight. Flueger’s Adam Ruzek on and off relationship with Marina Squerciati’s Kim Burgess resulted in their wedding during the Season 12 finale. The couple shares daughter Makayla, whom they adopted in earlier seasons.

As Chicago P.D. continues its thirteenth season, the unit struggles within the aftermath of Deputy Chief Charlie Reid’s death. Meanwhile, Ruzek and Burgess try to balance their married life with their demanding careers.
