Kanye West Approached Michael Che & Apologized for 2018 SNL Rant

Michael Che opened up about the apology he received from Kanye West during a recent appearance on SiriusXM’s The Bonfire on Thursday. The Saturday Night Live star looked back on the brief feud he was involved in with the rapper in 2018.

Michael Che got candid about the confrontation with Kanye West. The incident surfaced again this year following the release of Kanye West’s documentary In Whose Name? on September 19.

Che recalled how just before the show, West “didn’t seem like he was his normal self cuz he’d been in the show a million times.” He continued, “So it seemed like he was kind of not behaving like himself.” The “Weekend Update” co-host then remembered West’s impromptu remarks that left him shocked and offended.

After he went on stage, West launched a last-minute rant involving Che. “You can’t always have, every time you have a Black subject matter like [Bill] Cosby that you have to have a Black comedian talking about him,” the rapper stated. He then addressed Che, saying, “You know what I mean?”

Shortly after getting off stage, Che confronted West about his comments, saying, “I’m the Black comedian that made a joke about Cosby. That’s f***ed up. Why’d you do that to me?” It led to a brief altercation between the two stars.

When The Bonfire host Robert Kelly asked Che about his next interaction with West, the SNL star revealed the reason why he doesn’t “really like talking about it.” He added, “Because the next time I saw him was years later, I remember. It was the Eddie Murphy show, and every Black person in Hollywood was at this show.”

Che revealed that he crossed paths with West during the event, and he approached him with an apology. “I’m walking through the hallway and [Kanye’s] coming out the elevator bay and as soon as he sees me, he goes, ‘I owe you an apology,’” he said.

“And I hadn’t seen him in years. I didn’t even know if he remembered that that happened because he was saying so much. And he was like, ‘I owe you an apology.’ And we talked, and I was like, I never brought it up again,” Che concluded.
