With the recently released Him mostly garnering negative reviews, Marlon Wayans, who portrays Isaiah White in the horror flick, has issued a strong-worded reply to critics berating his film. The actor took to social media to take a jibe at film reviewers, sharing a slate of his past works to convey that poorly reviewed movies can also become ‘classics’ in due time.
Marlon Wayans urges fans not to ‘take anyone’s opinion’ after Him scores abysmal reviews
The White Chicks star remarked that even though film critics have a right to voice their opinions, fans should pass the verdict on a movie’s quality after seeing it for themselves.
“Just to be clear, I respect critics. Their job is to critique. I respect their work. It shapes our industry. But an opinion does not always mean it’s everyone’s opinion,” Marlon Wayans wrote in his latest Instagram post.
In order to hit his point home, the 53-year-old actor also included the screenshots of the low Rotten Tomatoes scores of his films, including White Chicks, Scary Movie, Scary Movie 2, Don’t Be a Menace, A Haunted House, as well as Him.
“Some movies are ahead of the curve. Innovation is not always embraced, and art is to be interpreted, and it’s subjective,” Wayans added. He then backed his latest outing on the big screen by highlighting how most of his critically panned films have gone on to become fan-favorites.
The Scary Movie actor wrote, “I’ve had a career of making classic movies that weren’t critically received and those movies went on to be CLASSICS. So don’t take anyone’s opinion, just go see for yourself. Love to all. Him in theaters now.”
Despite Marlon Wayans’ optimistic appeal, Him seems to have failed to resonate with the critics on any level. Produced by Jordan Peele’s Monkeypaw Productions, the film has secured an underwhelming 29% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes, with audiences giving it a more agreeable 58% score on the review-aggregation website.
