Harry Potter star Domhnall Gleeson recently opened up about his first day on the set of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1, where he fumbled his accent so badly that he referred to it as “one of the worst days of [his] life.” Here’s what went wrong with Domhnall Gleeson in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1.
Domhnall Gleeson says he struggled to tune into an English accent in Harry Potter 7
Domhnall Gleeson was not a regular part of the Harry Potter franchise. But he appeared in the last two movies in a substantial role as Bill Weasley, the eldest of the Weasley siblings.
While not many expected it, as Gleeson began his role, he struggled to get his accent right at all. “My first day on that set, I was meant to be doing an English accent,” the actor recalled during his appearance on Late Night With Seth Meyers, “They’d all been doing it — I was in the seventh and eighth movies, only a small part. And… I went Australian. And I couldn’t stop.”
Things got so out of hand with the aggressively Australian accent that director David Yates separately spoke to Gleeson. “I went Australian on the first take, and there were like 300 people on set, and the director was there like, ‘Cut!’ And this weird, long pause,” he remembered, “And then the director came over and he was like, ‘So you’ve gone Australian.”
He elaborated, “Everyone knows he’s gone Australian. And I was like, ‘No, I know,’…And he was like, ‘Is there anything you can do about it?’ ‘Not really mate. I think this is what we’re doing,” he added, “It was shocking. It was one of the worst days of my life. And then things got a little bit better. And so I hope my American accent in this [The Paper] is better, but you tell me!”
Meyers and Gleeson laughed about how, being a Weasley brother, changing his character origin to being an Australian was also not really an option.
Anyhow, ultimately, Gleeson did deliver, and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 ended up being one of the finest in the series.
