Caprio’s death followed a diagnosis of pancreatic cancer in 2023. Despite the illness, he remained publicly engaged, sharing updates with his followers and expressing his determination to fight the disease.
In one of his final social media posts, he revealed he had experienced a “setback” in treatment and asked fans to “remember me in your prayers.” His official Instagram account confirmed that he had passed away peacefully.
The statement read, “He will be remembered not only as a respected judge, but as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend. His legacy lives on in the countless acts of kindness he inspired.” David Caprio, his son, expressed gratitude to fans for their outpouring of support.
Caprio’s fame skyrocketed with his TV show Caught in Providence, where clips of his lighthearted interactions and compassionate judgments amassed billions of views. It earned him the affectionate title, “the nicest judge in the world.”
During his tenure, Caprio has adjudicated a wide range of cases in Providence, often leaving impression with his humane approach. Highlights from Caught in Providence included moments where he invited children to sit beside him on the bench. The show received three Daytime Emmy nominations, with Caprio himself earning two nods last year.
Caprio is survived by his wife, Joyce, their five kids, seven grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
