Late Batman Forever star Val Kilmer was brought to life on screen via AI. Kilmer passed away on April 1, 2025, and his fans, industry colleagues, and well-wishers mourned his unfortunate death. Interestingly, five years prior to his death, Kilmer was cast as Father Fintan, a Catholic priest in the film As Deep as the Grave. However, the actor was battling throat cancer and couldn’t make it to the set to fulfill his professional commitments.
Batman Forever star Val Kilmer returning to movies via AI
Batman Forever star, the late Val Kilmer, returned to movies through AI. Even though Kilmer signed on to the film As Deep as the Grave, he wasn’t able to commit to the grueling shoot schedules due to his ill health. Writer/Director Coerte Voorhees said, “He was the actor I wanted to play this role. It was very much designed around him. He was just going through a really, really tough time medically, and he couldn’t do it.” (via Variety).
Hence, Voorhees decided to employ state-of-the-art generative AI to complete his film starring the late actor. As per Voorhees, Kilmer’s estate and his children have been fully supportive of his vision. Voorhees explained, “His family kept saying how important they thought the movie was and that Val really wanted to be a part of this. He really thought it was an important story that he wanted his name on. It was that support that gave me the confidence to say, okay, let’s do this. Despite the fact some people might call it controversial, this is what Val wanted.”
The film has utilized younger images of Kilmer as well as footage from the latter part of his life to showcase Father Fintan in various stages of his life. The late star’s family has provided the filmmaker with relevant pictures, videos, and their blessings as well.
Voorhees reasoned that theirs is a small indie film and did not have the budget to recast the actor. Hence, they decided to use AI to bring Kilmer to life on screen. The filmmaker is aware of the criticism surrounding AI, but he hopes audiences give their film a chance and realize that AI can be used ethically as well. Voorhees also clarified that the production relied on SAG guidelines and compensated the late actor’s estate.
