Popular Costco Wine Recalled Over Bottles Prone to Shattering

A recall of nearly one million bottles of a popular Costco wine has been issued by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). The product in question is the retailer’s Kirkland Signature Valdobbiadene Prosecco, a type of dry Italian sparking white wine manufactured in Italy. The specific bottles of wine being recalled, which are prone to breaking and shattering without warning, were sold between April 25 and August 26, 2025 and was subject to a voluntary recall by the company several months ago. This CPSC recall is effectively a follow-up to that. Here’s what to do if you own any of these Prosecco wine bottles from Costco.

Recall impacts almost one million bottles of Kirkland Prosecco wine

The 941,400 Prosecco wine bottles, specifically called Kirkland Signature Valdobbiadene Prosecco DOCG bottles, that have been affected by this recall are a “laceration hazard,” according to a CPSC report issued on Thursday, November 6.

This echoes a notice sent out by Costco Wholesale about two months ago says that “there is a risk of unopened bottles shattering, even when not handled or in use.”

The November report notes that F&F Fine Wine International has received ten reports of the bottles breaking or shattering, with one report indicating a laceration injury.

Given the scope of the recall impacting nearly a million bottles of wine, it could be one of the largest Costco recalls of all time, more than one for the company’s salmon earlier this year due to Listeria bacterial contamination and another for Costco butter in November 2024 over a missing disclaimer.

Sold at retail price for $8 each, the affected bottles of white wine can be identified by its olive-green bottle, lavender foil top, and a lavender square label along the front with the Kirkland Signature logo and the words “Valdobbiadene Proseccco Superiore D.O.C.G.” in white text. Underneath that are the words “Product of Italy / Product of d’Italie” and “11% ALC/VOL 750 mL” in black text. The shapes of the bottles under the brand Ethica Wines can differ. A full image of the product can be found in the CPSC report.

he UPC code for the bottles is 196633883742 while the Costco item number is 1879870. The affected bottles were sold in Costco stores in 12 different states primarily in the Midwest, including Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, and Wisconsin.

A notice by Ethica Wines provides instructions on what customers should do if they have purchased or received one of these Prosecco bottles. The company encourages customers to stop using the wine immediately and discard them in the trash, instead of returning them to Costco. Meanwhile, the Costco notice says to wrap the unbottled bottle in paper towels and then placed in a plastic bag before putting it in the garbage to minimize the risk of injury from glass shattering.

For safety reasons, transporting the bottles back to the stores could be dangerous as it would increase the risk of them breaking, as would keeping the bottles in storage for a prolonged period of time.

Those who have received the letter notice from Costco and/or Ethica Wines can use it as proof for a full refund of the bottle’s purchase price.

For more information on the recall, customers can reach out to Ethica Wines by phone at (786)-810-7132 from Monday to Friday from 8 AM EST to 7 PM EST or via email at customercare@ethicawines.com.

Several other major recalls have impacted food products over the last two weeks. The FDA has expanded the ongoing recall list for cinnamon due to products going over the safety limit for lead contamination, and a ready-to-eat pasta item has been recalled due to a Listeria outbreak that has been already been linked to at least six deaths.
