In conjunction with various state programs, the FDA collected samples of the products listed above at their retail establishments to confirm their concentration of lead. The lead concentrations for these cinnamon products range from 2.2 to 10.7 parts per million (ppm). The FDA recommended that lead levels in candy products consumed by children not exceed 0.1 ppm.
The FDA advises that consumers with the affected products above throw away and dispose them as soon as possible. If they believe someone has been affected by elevated levels of lead, it is recommended that they reach out to their healthcare provider.
That said, the report cites that “most people have no obvious immediate symptoms of lead exposure.” Over months and years, elevated lead levels can lead to adverse health effects, particularly for children and babies who can have “neurological effects such as learning disabilities, behavior difficulties, and lowered IQ.” While cinnamon is not a food typically targeted to young children, the ingredient is used in many foods that they consume.
No illnesses or adverse events have been reported to date due to these products.
While the FDA has recommended that the distributors for the products voluntarily recall the products, some have not yet made a recall announcement for the associated item. That said, the majority of the distributors, 12 of the 18, have complied.
Since the initial alert in July 2024, the FDA has updated the recall five additional times, three of which came in September and October 2025.
Several recalls involving Listeria bacteria contamination have impacted peaches and ready-to-eat pasta meals.
