“She’s a registered Republican?” Trump asked. He then said, “Oh, now I love her ad. You’d be surprised at how many people are Republicans. That’s what I wouldn’t have known, but I’m glad you told me that.” The President added, “If Sydney Sweeney is a registered Republican, I think her ad is fantastic.”
Trump’s remarks come as the Euphoria star faces ongoing backlash over American Eagle’s latest campaign ad. According to multiple reports, including the New York Post, Sweeney officially registered with the Republican Party of Florida on June 14, 2024, shortly after purchasing a home in Monroe County. The registration was made public just as online criticism over her ad campaign continues.
American Eagle’s ad features the actress under the headline, “Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans,” a tagline intended around a pun between “genes” and “jeans.” Furthermore, one of the videos shows Sweeney walking up to a billboard that reads “Sydney Sweeney Has Great Genes.” She crosses out the word “Genes” and writes “Jeans” before walking away.
The ad drew significant criticism online. Some critics claim the ad carries the tone of eugenics and racial superiority. Meanwhile, others claim that the backlash is overblown. Last week, American Eagle also issued a statement standing by its campaign. They said, “‘Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans’ is and always was about the jeans. Her jeans. Her story.”
