Matt Damon is back in the spotlight after sparking fresh drama with longtime frenemy Jimmy Kimmel. The Oscar winner appeared as a surprise trivia partner to Jeopardy! host Ken Jennings on a new episode of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, reigniting their years-long “feud” in front of a live audience.
Here’s how Damon surprised Kimmel, won big for charity, and turned the moment into another jab in their ongoing feud.
Here’s why Matt Damon and Jimmy Kimmel are feuding
Matt Damon and Jimmy Kimmel’s ongoing comedic feud resurfaced during the July 30 episode of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire. Damon made a surprise appearance as Jeopardy! host Ken Jennings’ trivia partner.
Jennings and Damon went on to answer the final $1 million question correctly. They won the top prize for Damon’s nonprofit, Water.org. As confetti fell, Damon noted that the money would help 200,000 people gain access to clean water.
The episode’s final questions tested their teamwork. The $500,000 question asked which person entered the entertainment world by entering a Steve Martin look-alike contest. They used the “Ask the Host” lifeline. Kimmel identified Bill Nye as the correct answer.
For the $1 million question, Jennings immediately thought of the word Susurrus. It matched the clue describing the sound of wind through trees. A 50:50 lifeline left Susurrus and Petrichor, confirming their choice.
The feud escalated on screen when Kimmel jokingly labeled Damon’s presence as a “betrayal” by Jennings. Damon, finally on Kimmel’s show in some form, quipped, “I’m not on your stupid show, I’m on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire. That’s way better.” Kimmel responded, “I look at it as if Michael Jordan showed up with a hemorrhoid,” referencing Damon’s comparison of Jennings to the basketball icon.
Jennings praised Damon’s arrival by calling him his trivia “Michael Jordan,” and the crowd cheered when he shouted, “Everybody but Jimmy Kimmel, do we love Matt Damon or what?” Kimmel booed in response. Damon then told the audience, “You are making him so miserable right now.”
Kimmel, who has hosted and executive produced the show since its 2020 reboot, begrudgingly posed for a photo with Damon and Jennings holding the oversized check. The episode continued the running gag that began in 2005 when Kimmel first jokingly snubbed Damon on Jimmy Kimmel Live!
