Hughes said, “You have a really good hairline.” That simple phrase prompted Siwa to open up about years of bullying she endured growing up. As she dried her hair on camera, she explained, “That’s the number one thing I was bullied for as a child.”
Meanwhile, Hughes immediately comforted her. “I love you,” he said softly as he wiped her tears with a tissue and pulled her into a hug. He repeated the compliment, saying, “It’s got so much hair” (via E! Online).
In the video’s caption, Siwa reflected on the moment and revealed how impactful Hughes’ words truly were. She shared that she had been the target of jokes and memes between 2017 and 2020 focused around her hairline.
The singer wrote, “He had no idea of the 2017-2020 hairline memes that I’m not affected by on the daily anymore, but him saying this out of thin air literally finished healing a part of me.” She added, “It’s almost like I had a band aid over it for the last 8 years and just was leaving it there scared to look under it to see if it’s healed.”
Siwa has previously attributed her receding hairline to a stress-induced rash she developed while filming Dance Moms. She concluded with, “Lucky lucky girl I am. Don’t even think I realize how lucky sometimes.”
