Dwayne Wade claims injuries kept him from having a career like Michael Jordan

Last year, Dwyane Wade opened up about his career aspirations and belief that he could have reached Michael Jordan’s legendary status if not for an unfortunate injury record. During a 2024 appearance on Carmelo Anthony’s 7PM in Brooklyn podcast, the Miami Heat icon candidly revealed his former confidence in challenging MJ’s throne.

Wade stated how he once felt he was on a trajectory to surpass the basketball legend before injuries altered his path. He shared that nobody really understood his game as he did “so many different things.” He claimed, “I’m not the greatest shooter of all time, but I was great at so many things. So nobody knows how to break down my game,” resulting in many overlooking his real talent.

Speaking of his promising career, he added, “When I had it, I had it. Before injuries, I thought, MJ, I am coming for you.”

Wade rapidly became a superstar after Miami drafted him fifth overall in 2003, winning a championship in just his third season. His scoring output peaked in 2008-09, when he averaged 30.2 points per game. He then claimed two more championships in 2012 and 2013 alongside fellow All-Stars LeBron James and Chris Bosh.

However, Wade’s momentum faltered as he was plagued by persistent knee and shoulder problems that significantly impacted his prime years. He reportedly faced a major left shoulder dislocation and torn labrum in 2007, which required surgery and caused nerve damage.

To avoid missing the entire season, Wade opted for rehabilitation and only got the surgery after the playoffs ended. His chronic knee pain also became recurring throughout his career, forcing multiple procedures and missed games. During the championship runs, Wade frequently required knee drainage and struggled with bone bruises, ankle sprains, and various nagging injuries.
