Jane’s Addiction Sues Perry Farrell Amid Onstage Assault

Jane’s Addiction band members Dave Navarro, Eric Avery, and Stephen Perkins have filed a lawsuit against their lead singer, Perry Farrell. This suit is the result of a shocking event that took place last year when Farrell assaulted Navarro on stage. The assault resulted in the cancellation of the rock band’s North American reunion tour. It also caused plans for a new album to fall through. The music group was first formed in 1985. It became one of the first bands from the 1990s alternative rock movement to achieve commercial success.

So, why was Perry Farrell sued? Here’s the Jane’s Addiction lawsuit explained.

Jane’s Addiction sues lead singer over assault

Perry Farrell was sued by his fellow Jane’s Addiction bandmates because he assaulted Navarro during a concert performance in Boston in September 2024.

The concert was part of the group’s now-cancelled North American reunion tour. During the performance, Farrell shoved Navarro and angrily approached the latter, who tried to de-escalate the situation. The former attempted to punch him, only to be stopped by the other bandmates, who tried to calm him down. Farrell was subsequently taken backstage.

The lawsuit obtained by Rolling Stone accused the Lollapalooza co-founder of assault, battery, intentional infliction of emotional distress, negligence, breach of fiduciary duty, and breach of contract. In the suit, Navarro, Avery, and Perkins alleged that the band lost over $10 million due to the reunion tour’s cancellation, stoppage of band activities, and plans to launch a new album. The suit also mentions that the group has asked Farrell to pay all the outstanding bills from the cancellation.

In response to the lawsuit, Farrell filed a 30-page legal complaint against Navarro, Avery, and Perkins. He accused the trio of planning a years-long campaign to bully and undermine him. He also alleged that he wasn’t kept in the loop when it came to the tour’s cancellation and the band’s breakup.

Moreover, he explained that the on-stage altercation between him and Navarro stemmed from his frustration with the latter, Avery, and Perkins “playing their instruments at a high volume so that he could not hear himself sing without blasting his own in-ear monitors at an unsafe level.” Furthermore, he alleged that Navarro assaulted him and his wife, Etty Lau, backstage (via Variety.)

Earlier this year, it was revealed that Navarro, Avery, and Perkins were working on new music without Farrell’s involvement. In an Instagram post shared in January, Avery revealed that development was already underway.
