Concerns regarding Richard Dreyfuss’ health emerged among fans as the iconic Jaws actor shared an update for fans. The Oscar-winning star’s current condition forced him to cancel his appearance at this weekend’s SharkCon event in Tampa, Florida. The 77-year-old veteran artist announced the news in a video from his hospital bed.
Richard Dreyfuss talks about his health in a new video
Richard Dreyfuss has been hospitalized with viral bronchitis. The actor shared the current health update via an Instagram video, noting that doctors advised against flying due to his condition.
Dreyfuss seemed unhappy about the cancellation, as he stated, “I’ve been told by my doctors I cannot fly, and I would have to fly five hours to get [to SharkCon]. I’m terribly sorry because I had planned to be there and had been looking forward to it. But I’m unable to do so.”
The American Graffiti star is prioritizing safety above all else as he added, “I don’t want to get anyone else sick, and I don’t want to get sicker myself. I feel terrible about not showing up, and I feel worse about exposing you to this, apparently, very viral illness.”
Dreyfuss also assured fans that he would meet them at future events. The Goodbye Girl star gushed, “But there will be other times and I will make it my business to show up.” Before ending the video, the acclaimed actor revealed, “I’m in a lot of pain and that has to come first, my health. I feel very good about having the time and enough health.”
For the unversed, bronchitis is “an inflammation of the airways leading into your lungs.” As per the Cleveland Clinic, a viral infection can lead to acute bronchitis. It generally goes away on its own in a few weeks.
On the other hand, fans seemed supportive of Dreyfuss’ current condition. Many left positive messages for him to get well soon. One fan commented on the Instagram page of SharkCon, “Your fans love you enough; we don’t need autographs. Just enjoy your life, my friend.” Another wrote, “Congratulations on your 50-year Jaws anniversary. All our best and much love.”
Meanwhile, Dreyfuss most recently appeared in Sweetwater (2023), a biographical sports drama about Nat “Sweetwater” Clifton, the first African American to sign an NBA contract.
