During a conversation with Kevin Bacon on The Drew Barrymore Show, Drew Barrymore recalled her experience working with Val Kilmer on the 1995 film Batman Forever.

She stated, “I was friends with Joel Schumacher, the director, who I thought of this morning because it was he and Val Kilmer that pulled me into Batman Forever.” Reflecting on Kilmer’s behavior during filming, Barrymore said, “And Val Kilmer was so nice to me. He was so nurturing and kind and safe, which was a very important thing for me.” She added, “Yeah, I was like, ‘Nobody wants anything from me, they want things for me,’ which I thought was really interesting.”

Kevin Bacon responded that such behavior was “probably not that common in those days,” to which Barrymore agreed. The discussion about Kilmer arose on The Drew Barrymore Show while Bacon was reflecting on past work, including his role in Flatliners (1990), directed by Joel Schumacher. Barrymore used the opportunity to connect with Bacon over their shared experiences with Schumacher and Kilmer.

Bacon also shared his personal connection to Kilmer, recounting their time together in the 1983 Broadway production Slab Boys, alongside Sean Penn and Jackie Earle Haley. “It was great. I just always look at that as one of the great experiences of my life and getting a chance to know him,” Bacon said.

Val Kilmer passed away on April 1 at the age of 65 due to pneumonia. He had previously battled throat cancer, which significantly altered his voice. A Juilliard-trained actor, Kilmer was recognized for his range and authenticity in roles across films such as The Doors, The Saint, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Batman Forever, Tombstone, Thunderheart, Willow, and his final credited role, Top Gun: Maverick.
