Donald Trump has fired Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem. The US President announced her replacement in a Truth Social post that drew immediate bipartisan praise from Capitol Hill. The decision caps weeks of mounting tension within the administration and signals Trump’s growing frustration with his embattled cabinet official.
Members of Congress praise Donald Trump
Lawmakers from both sides of the aisle are applauding Donald Trump’s decision. House Republicans and Democrats alike praised the president’s announcement that he would replace Noem with Markwayne Mullin, citing her recent performance and internal chaos at the Department of Homeland Security.
Rep. Byron Donalds, R-Fla., told NBC News, “It was time. Right decision.” The Florida Republican added that Noem’s hearings with members of Congress yesterday “obviously did not go well,” reflecting a sentiment shared by many in the House.
Democrats also voiced support for the move. Rep. Jared Moskowitz, D-Fla., said earlier today that he believes Noem’s removal will help push Department of Homeland Security funding negotiations forward. “I’m happy she’s gone. I think the president made the right decision. … I think this will open up our ability to negotiate and figure out, you know, where we can get some, some policy changes,” Moskowitz said.
The House did pass an appropriations bill to fund DHS through the end of the fiscal year today, with four Democrats joining Republicans to vote in favor, suggesting that Noem’s exit may already be easing legislative gridlock. Rep. Glenn Ivey, D-Md., told the outlet that he felt the pushback to immigration enforcement tactics in Minnesota “was an embarrassment to the Trump administration.”
“Donald Trump doesn’t handle embarrassments very well. So once they got run out of Minnesota, I figured her days were numbered,” Ivey said, referring to Noem. Rep. Don Bacon, R-Neb., also pointed to the chaos in Minneapolis. Bacon told the outlet, “It showed me there was probably a need for a calmer, level-headed leadership.”
Now, a former MMA fighter and staunch conservative, will take over at the end of the month, pending Senate confirmation.
