Selena Gomez Recalls Making Taylor Swift & Her Mom Cry

Selena Gomez has opened up about an emotional moment involving her longtime friend Taylor Swift, revealing a personal story tied to one of her most impactful songs. In a recent interview, Gomez reflected on Swift’s heartfelt reaction after hearing her 2019 single for the first time.

Here’s what we know about the moment that brought Taylor Swift to tears.

Selena Gomez talks about one song that made Taylor Swift cry

Selena Gomez revealed in an iHeartRadio interview that Taylor Swift and her mother, Andrea Swift, cried when she played them her 2019 hit song “Lose You to Love Me” before its release.

“When I played her ‘Lose You to Love Me,’ right before it came out, she and her amazing mom started to cry and then I started crying,” Gomez said. The emotional moment occurred as Gomez shared the song, which later appeared on her 2020 album Rare.

Gomez explained that she values Swift’s input on her music. “I value her opinion so much, because she’s super honest. It’s very helpful, and I love people who are honest,” she said. Swift, who has written many of her own emotional hits, responded publicly to Gomez’s recent work, writing, “I LOVE THIS ALBUM SO MUCH OH MY GODDDDDDDDDDDD,” on Instagram Stories about Gomez’s new album I Said I Love You First with fiancé Benny Blanco.

Many speculated that Gomez wrote “Lose You to Love Me” about her past relationship with Justin Bieber, which ended before he married Hailey Bieber. Gomez and Swift formed a close friendship after they met in 2008 while dating Nick and Joe Jonas, respectively.

In December 2024, after Gomez and Blanco announced their engagement, Swift confirmed her role in the wedding by commenting, “Yes I will be the flower girl,” on their post.

Gomez and Blanco released I Said I Love You First on March 21, 2025, including the track “Younger and Hotter Than Me,” which fans believe references Swift. The lyrics say, “We’re not gettin’ any younger / But your girlfriends seem to.” Fans pointed out similarities to Swift’s 2021 lyrics in “All Too Well.”
