Christopher Nolan Becomes Directors Guild of America President

The Directors Guild of America (DGA) has elected acclaimed filmmaker Christopher Nolan as its new president. The appointment places one of Hollywood’s most influential and successful directors at the helm of the 19,500-member union.

The announcement came during the DGA’s biennial national convention, where Nolan ran unopposed and was chosen to succeed the outgoing president. Lesli Linka Glatter, who led the guild through the 2023 actors’ and writers’ strikes, passed the baton to Nolan after two terms.

For Nolan, becoming the new president of the Directors Guild of America is “one of the greatest honors of my career.” Furthermore, he added, “Our industry is experiencing tremendous change, and I thank the Guild’s membership for entrusting me with this responsibility. I also want to thank President Glatter for her leadership over the past four years. I look forward to collaborating with her and the newly elected Board to achieve important creative and economic protections for our members.”

While audiences primarily know Nolan for his blockbusters, he has been steadily active within the DGA for years. Since joining in 2001, he has been a member of the national board and the Western Directors’ Council, while also serving as chair of the Theatrical Creative Rights Committee and the Artificial Intelligence Committee. He has consistently used his platform to champion theatrical moviegoing and traditional film formats, including IMAX and 70mm.

Directors Guild of America’s new board will soon face negotiations with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP), with talks expected to begin next year ahead of the DGA’s contract expiration in 2026.

Streaming residuals, workplace safety, and creative protections are all expected to dominate the discussions. In a statement congratulating Nolan, the AMPTP said, “We look forward to partnering with President Nolan to address the issues most important to DGA members while ensuring our member companies remain competitive in a rapidly changing industry.” (via The Hollywood Reporter)
