Mia Goth reveals she was both excited and nervous when she was to meet Christopher Nolan. The actress and the filmmaker were set to work together on The Odyssey. Goth recalled a tense audition process and strict secrecy around the project. The fantasy movie also stars Matt Damon, Tom Holland, and others.
Mia Goth talks about meeting Christopher Nolan for the first time
Mia Goth told Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast that the drive to her Universal Studios audition left her feeling physically ill with nerves. “I remember driving over to Universal and being so nervous that I wanted to throw up,” she said. “I tried to tell myself what a privilege it is to even feel this.”
Goth also described how secretive the casting process was. She said she was given “dummy sides” that had nothing to do with the real script, and that she had to accept the role before she was allowed to read the actual screenplay.
“I had to accept the job before I could even read the script and find out what the role was. So that was a new process. So I said, ‘Yeah, I’m in.’ And then they gave me the script.”
On the set of The Odyssey, Mia Goth said the 55-year-old’s working methods felt intense but unifying. She described the experience as “completely overwhelming and totally surreal,” and that after a few days, the shoot began to feel collaborative.
The 32-year-old noted some of Nolan’s well-known on-set rules, such as no mobile phones, limited seating, and a sense that everyone stays present and focused. She said this approach helped actors feel they “owned that space.”
Mia Goth plays Melantho, one of Penelope’s handmaids, in Christopher Nolan’s retelling of the ancient Greek epic. The film stars Matt Damon as Odysseus, with Anne Hathaway as Penelope and Tom Holland as Telemachus. The ensemble also includes Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron, and Lupita Nyong’o, among others. It is scheduled for release in July 2026.
