Christopher Nolan’s ambitious science-fiction thriller Tenet will soon be leaving Netflix. The high-concept film, which includes time-bending concepts, earned global attention for both its technical execution and challenging storytelling.
Tenet won’t stream on Netflix for very long
Christopher Nolan’s 2020 sci-fi thriller Tenet is nearing the end of its current run on Netflix, with the film set to exit the platform at the close of the month. According to What’s On Netflix, viewers have until January 1 to watch the movie before it is removed from the service.
Released in 2020 during the early stages of many theaters reopening after pandemic closures, Tenet faced an unusual and challenging rollout. Despite those circumstances, the film earned approximately $360 million at the global box office on a reported production budget exceeding $200 million (via Box Office Mojo).
The sci-fi feature centers on a CIA operative known only as the Protagonist, portrayed by John David Washington. Recruited into a covert organization called Tenet, the Protagonist works alongside an ally named Neil in order to stop a catastrophic global event. Their mission places them in conflict with Andrei Sator, a powerful Russian oligarch who seeks to exploit technology capable of manipulating time itself.
The film features a high-profile supporting cast that includes Robert Pattinson, Elizabeth Debicki, Kenneth Branagh, and Aaron Taylor-Johnson.
The film currently holds a 70 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 380 reviews. It was praised for its scale and execution, but the film drew criticism for its complexity. Niall Browne of Movies in Focus wrote, “Christopher Nolan’s Tenet is a film which can be enjoyed, but it’s highly likely that you won’t really understand it. It takes a lot of big ideas – and a lot of big moviemaking techniques to deliver a film which is mesmerising but very flawed.”
