Netflix is developing an hour-long television adaptation of The God of the Woods, the bestselling novel by author Liz Moore, as per Variety. The project is being produced by Sony Pictures Television and Original Film, with Moore and Liz Hannah attached as co-showrunners, writers, and executive producers.

Announcing the adaptation, Moore and Hannah said in a joint statement, “We love making TV and can’t wait to bring The God of the Woods to life with our partners at Sony and Netflix. We hope everyone falls in love (and hate) with these characters as much as we have.”

Set in the Adirondacks, the series centers on the disappearance of 13-year-old Barbara Van Laar from her family’s summer camp. The event reopens wounds from an earlier tragedy within the influential Van Laar family. As authorities investigate the case, the story moves between past and present, exposing long-buried secrets, class divisions, and consequences of wealth.

The adaptation continues Moore’s collaboration with Sony Pictures Television and Original Film following Long Bright River, which aired earlier this year on Peacock and earned critical attention.

Neal H. Moritz and Pavun Shetty are executive-producing the new Netflix series on behalf of Original Film. However, as of now Netflix has not yet announced casting details or a release timeline.

The God of the Woods has drawn significant attention since its release, appearing on multiple best-of lists and gaining high-profile recognition. Former President Barack Obama rated it as one of his favorite books of the year, and Taylor Swift was shown listening to the audiobook in her documentary, The End of an Era.
