A new KPop Demon Hunters short film reportedly gets PG rating
The Motion Picture Association (MPA) has reportedly given a PG rating to a new KPop Demon Hunters short film, titled Debut: A KPop Demon Hunters Story. This means that the project might come out soon, though its exact release date remains unknown at the time of this article’s composition. It’s also unknown whether the short will premiere on Netflix, some other platform, theatrically, or as an associated piece alongside a future entry in the franchise.
Sony, the production company behind KPop Demon Hunters, originally announced a short film back in March 2023 via a press release. The studio revealed that the project was part of the Sony Pictures Animation and Sony Pictures Imageworks’ LENS (Leading and Empowering New Storytellers) mentorship program. If Debut: A KPop Demon Hunters Story is indeed the LENS project, it was developed by participants in the program’s second round after The Spider Within, which takes place in the world of the Spider-Verse franchise.
Additionally, it’s unclear what the plot of the short film will be. It can potentially explore the origin of Huntr/x, the K-pop group the protagonists are part of, or follow them on a separate quest.
It’s also unclear which members of the original film’s cast will reprise their roles in the short. The voice cast of KPop Demon Hunters includes Arden Cho as Rumi (with Ejae providing the voice), May Hong as Mira (with Audrey Nuna providing the voice), and Ji-young Yoo as Zoey (with Rei Ami providing the voice).
A PG rating denotes “parental guidance suggested. Some material may not be
suitable for children.”
