With James Gunn’s upcoming directorial Superman just a month away from making its premiere on the big screens, a rumor has come out on the internet that suggests the movie initially had a plethora of sex jokes. However, the status quo has since changed, with Gunn reportedly opting to leave such quips on the editing floor to make his feature a bit less edgy than it originally was.
Superman rumored to have had ‘a lot of sex jokes’
According to renowned scooper MyTimeToShineHello, the David Corenswet-led film supposedly contained several adult-oriented jokes in the formative stages of its production.
In their latest X (formerly Twitter) update, MTTSH noted, “I heard James Gunn has removed a lot of the sex jokes from Superman.” While it remains unknown if Superman had such gags to begin with, their supposed elimination sits in line with the tone of the film’s theatrical cut. The MPAA recently assigned a PG-13 rating to it, suggesting that there will be minimal below-the-belt humor in the first DCU flick.
In addition to the apparent removal of sex jokes, a previous report from World of Reel claimed that Superman went through a ‘slight course correction’ after receiving mixed reactions from fans during its initial test screenings. As such, higher-level executives decided to introduce several changes to the film, including trimming down the extent of James Gunn’s signature humor.
Moreover, an editor from the crew received the boot, which was followed by an overhaul of the movie’s structure. Aside from reshuffling some sequences, the team further decided to add some minor sequences to tweak the tone and runtime of Superman.
Additionally, the report mentioned that DC Studios even hired a second composer to redo the film’s score. In conclusion, the entertainment giants have apparently cut down 25 minutes from the initial versions of Superman.
Be it the studios changing the film’s music or James Gunn ditching the rumored sex jokes in his upcoming feature, all should be well if Superman ends up dominating the global box office following its release on July 11, 2025.
