The Day After Tomorrow arrives on Hulu next month
Jake Gyllenhaal’s sci-fi film The Day After Tomorrow is set to arrive on Hulu soon. The platform has confirmed in a recent press release that the film will be available for streaming starting April 1, 2026. The movie returns to digital platforms years after its theatrical release, during which it delivered strong results at the global box office.
Directed by Roland Emmerich, the film was released in U.S. theaters on May 28, 2004. It is adapted from the 1999 book The Coming Global Superstorm by Art Bell and Whitley Strieber. The narrative follows paleoclimatologist Jack Hall. He begins to identify early signs of a major environmental shift after a massive ice shelf breaks apart during a research expedition in Antarctica.
As the situation develops, extreme weather events begin affecting multiple regions. At the same time, Jack’s son Sam travels to New York City. There, worsening conditions, including continuous rainfall and sudden temperature drops, leave him stranded. As the crisis escalates and populations begin moving toward warmer regions, Jack undertakes a high-risk journey from Washington, D.C. to New York City in an attempt to reach him.
The film features Dennis Quaid as Jack Hall, Gyllenhaal as Sam Hall, Sela Ward as Dr. Lucy Hall, Emmy Rossum as Laura Chapman, and Ian Holm as Terry Rapson. Despite a mixed critical reception, the film performed strongly at the global box office. It holds a 45% critics’ score and a 50% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
According to Box Office Mojo, it earned approximately $552 million worldwide. This includes around $186 million domestically and $365 million from international markets.
