‘I’ve Moved Past the Confusion & Sadness’: Tig Notaro on Cheryl Hines Fallout

Tig Notaro has opened up about falling out with her friend, actress Cheryl Hines, over Robert F. Kennedy Jr. Notaro recalled being heckled during stand-up shows due to her association with Hines and her husband, which ultimately prompted her to make the difficult decision to part ways with her friend.

During her latest appearance on MS Now’s The Best People, Tig Notaro shared details about breaking ties with Cheryl Hines. Host Nicolle Wallace raised the topic, asking the comedian about her opinions on Hines’ takes on the Make America Healthy Again (MAHA) and Make America Great Again (MAGA) movements.

“It’s been very strange,” the Oscar-nominee responded. “My friendship with her predated Bobby. And there were things that [RFK Jr.] thought and felt that I didn’t agree with. But he didn’t have the platform that he got in the pandemic,” she shared.

Notaro continued, “I needed to stop doing the podcast because it was so ridiculous. It was so stupid, our show. It was hard to be doing that when he was gaining momentum. People would interrupt my stand-up shows and yell, ‘Bobby is crazy.’’

The 54-year-old went on to explain that she spoke to Hines about it, knowing that it was only a “small percentage that pushes back online.” However, she knew that it was “not her world” and didn’t want to be a part of it.

While Hines was understanding, she still wanted to continue their podcast, Tig and Cheryl: True Story. However, Notaro recalled insisting on stepping away, adding, “I loved her so much.”

However, their friendship took a massive toll when Notaro realized Hines wasn’t reaching out to her voluntarily. “I realized one day, she doesn’t ever reach out to me anymore. She responds to me, but she doesn’t reach out to me,” she explained. “I had to shake myself out of denial that she’s gone. Okay, I need to let this go.”

She concluded, “I’ve moved past the confusion and sadness.”
