One of Modern Family‘s lead actors has addressed why a proposed spin-off centered on Mitchell Pritchett and Cameron Tucker did not materialize. The actor recently shared that the idea was discussed after the long-running sitcom ended. However, he ultimately chose not to continue with his character.
Jesse Tyler Ferguson didn’t do Modern Family spin-off with Cam for this reason
Jesse Tyler Ferguson has opened up about why a proposed Modern Family spin-off centered on Mitchell Pritchett and Cameron Tucker ultimately never moved forward. Speaking on the March 3 episode of his podcast Dinner’s on Me, the actor explained that he was initially open to the idea of continuing the story alongside co-star Eric Stonestreet. However, he later realized that he wanted to pursue new opportunities after spending more than a decade playing the same character.
During the podcast episode, Ferguson shared that conversations about a potential spin-off began after the ABC comedy concluded its 11-season run in 2020. “Modern Family ended, and then we had a pandemic, you know. I was so excited for this next chapter of my life… And then it was like, everyone go inside,” he recalled.
During that period, the idea of a spin-off continued to develop. Ferguson said he was intrigued by the possibility, but he was also preparing for a stage production in New York. “During that time, they were brewing this idea of maybe doing a spin-off with Eric and I… Which I was interested in, but I was also supposed to do this play in New York,” he said.
As conversations about the potential series progressed, he began to reconsider returning to the same role. Ferguson noted, “As the reality of maybe the spin-off was actually going to happen, I literally felt like, ‘Oh my God, I want to date other people.’ Is what I felt like. I have to feel what it’s like to not do that. It didn’t end up working out.”
