President Donald Trump fires Kristi Noem from her position as Secretary of Homeland Security and appoints Oklahoma Senator Markwayne Mullin as her replacement. The announcement, made via Truth Social, is the first major cabinet reshuffle of Trump’s second term.
Donald Trump replaces Kristi Noem with this ‘MAGA warrior’
The decision to fire Kristi Noem comes after months of growing tension between the South Dakota governor-turned-cabinet official and the White House. Trump confirmed that Mullin, a former MMA fighter and staunch conservative, will take over the Department of Homeland Security at the end of the month, pending Senate confirmation.
However, Noem isn’t leaving the administration entirely as Trump has tapped her for a new role as special envoy for the “Shield of the Americas.” It is a security initiative focused on the Western hemisphere. “I thank Kristi for her service at ‘Homeland,'” Trump wrote in his announcement, softening what has otherwise been a rocky exit.
The change ends Noem’s tenure leading the department responsible for implementing the administration’s immigration policies. Noem gained attention early in her role by participating in immigration raids, often appearing alongside field agents wearing a bulletproof vest. She advocated for Trump’s deportation initiatives and policies that effectively closed the US-Mexico border.
Noem’s approach generated criticism from various quarters. Homeland Security secretaries typically do not participate directly in field operations. During a visit to El Salvador’s Cecot prison, which houses some migrants deported from the US, Noem wore a Rolex valued at approximately $50,000. She also appeared on horseback in a DHS advertising campaign encouraging undocumented immigrants to leave the country. Some critics referred to Kristi Noem as “ICE Barbie.”
Now, Markwayne Mullin brings a different background to the role. Before entering politics, he competed as a professional MMA fighter. He has consistently supported hardline immigration positions. Moreover, the change in leadership comes as polling indicates Americans hold mixed views on immigration enforcement approaches.
Whether additional cabinet changes will follow remains unclear at this time.
