Robert Aramayo beats Leonardo DiCaprio and Timothée Chalamet at BAFTAs
Timothée Chalamet and Leonardo DiCaprio were snubbed in the Best Actor category at the BAFTA Awards, with the award ultimately going to Robert Aramayo for I Swear. The other nominees in this specific category were Chalamet (Marty Supreme), DiCaprio (One Battle After Another), Ethan Hawke (Blue Moon), Michael B. Jordan (Sinners), and Jesse Plemons (Bugonia).
Kerry Washington presented the award to Aramayo, who had a hard time believing that he won the BAFTA honor. As he accepted the award, he gave a heartfelt speech, expressing gratitude and acknowledging his fellow nominees. He said, “I absolutely can’t believe this. I can’t believe I’m here looking at people like you, in the same category as you. Never mind being stood up here.”
After thanking the team behind I Swear, he further added, “I honestly cannot believe that I have won this award,” Aramayo reiterated. “I really, really cannot. Everyone in this category blows me away.” On stage, he also recalled the time when his fellow nominee, Hawke, gave a speech to him and his classmates. It was during his visit to the Juilliard acting school.
Directed by Kirk Jones, I Swear is a Scottish biographical film that follows John Davidson, who develops Tourette’s syndrome at a very young age. However, the people around him did not understand his diagnosis, which led to him being isolated by his peers. As a result, he decides to spread awareness about his condition.
