US House Votes Against Donald Trump’s Canada Tariffs

The US House of Representatives voted against President Donald Trump‘s tariffs on Canadian goods. During the voting, Democrats were joined by six Republicans in favor of removing the Canadian tariffs. However, it will only proceed if the US Senate and Trump agree, with the latter’s approval highly unlikely. Moreover, President Trump also took to social media to share his reaction to the members who voted against the tariffs.

President Trump faces a major challenge as the US House of Representatives opposes the tariffs on Canadian goods. Recently, he threatened to impose a 100% tariff on Canada if the nation strikes a deal with China. He wrote on Truth Social, “If Canada makes a deal with China, it will immediately be hit with a 100% tariff against all Canadian goods and products coming into the U.S.A. “The Democrats and six Republicans banded together to overturn Trump’s tariffs in a 219–211 vote.

During the voting session, Trump also immediately took to Truth Social to warn of what the consequences could be if any US House representatives voted against the tariffs. He wrote, “Any Republican, in the House or the Senate, that votes against TARIFFS will seriously suffer the consequences come Election time, and that includes Primaries!” He further added, “Our Trade Deficit has been reduced by 78%, the Dow Jones has just hit 50,000, and the S&P, 7,000, all Numbers that were considered IMPOSSIBLE just one year ago. In addition, TARIFFS have given us Economic and National Security, and no Republican should be responsible for destroying this privilege.”

While the votes turned out to be in the Democrats’ favor, it doesn’t immediately change anything. The measure first needs to be approved by the US Senate; even if it receives a nod from them, it still won’t become law unless Trump approves it, which he’s unlikely to do.

Last year, President Trump announced that he would impose 35% tariffs on imports from Canada, starting in August 2025. He informed Canadian PM Mark Carney about the renewed rate and warned that he would increase it if Canada retaliated. The President mentioned it in a letter released on his social media.
