After years of acclaim in the genre, Kevin Costner is once again considering a return to the sports movie spotlight. Known for classics like Field of Dreams and Tin Cup, the actor-director recently revealed he’s open to making another sports film if the right story comes along.
Kevin Costner hopes to make another movie about sports
Speaking with Entertainment Tonight at the Fanatics Super Bowl Party in San Francisco, Costner stated, “I would,” when asked if he would make another one. He added, “I had one and then the Cubs went and won the World Series. So I had one at one point. I was going to do it.”
He referenced past sports films, including Bull Durham, Field of Dreams, For the Love of the Game, and Draft Day. Costner explained, “Field of Dreams and Bull Durham separated themselves. I never saw that as being a risk.” He emphasized that a key factor is whether he fits the role: “If you don’t fit in a sports movie, you just shouldn’t do it. Doesn’t matter how much you love the sport.”
Costner described his process for choosing sports projects by aligning his “sensibilities up with the audience.” He said, “I knew I read something great in Bull Durham. I knew I read something great in Field of Dreams.” He believes in delivering realism to the genre: “You owe the sport the reality that you can bring to it.”
At the event, Costner also commented on Bad Bunny’s Super Bowl halftime show. He expressed support, saying, “I’m really happy people stuck by him, and what a thrill for him.” He added, “I hope we haven’t really spoiled it for him… but you know what? When the music’s behind him, that’s what has driven him to success.”
Costner also shared past memories of hosting private basketball games during Final Four weekends. “For about six years, we’d take over a gym… It would start with [Mike Krzyzewski]… and Rick Majerus. They would bring some of their players.” He said the experience of being welcomed by respected coaches stood out, stating, “To see these guys… to see them and the way those dudes treated me… was so classy.”
