Lego’s New $99 Orange Cat Set Receives Mixed Reaction

Lego has rolled out a brand-new set inspired by one of the internet’s most beloved pets, but the response hasn’t been universally warm. The Orange Cat set, priced just under $100, was designed as a tribute to ginger cats everywhere. While some builders are already excited to place it on their shelves, others feel the final look falls short, sparking a lively online debate.

Lego introduces new orange cat that has fans talking

The Orange Cat Lego set includes 1,755 pieces and offers a few customization options, such as swappable eye colors. Lego has picked March 1, 2026, as the official release date, with preorders already live. At first glance, the set seems tailor-made for animal fans and adult Lego collectors who prefer detailed display builds over play-heavy sets.

That early excitement didn’t last long once fans got a good look at the final design. Some Lego diehards feel the cat misses the mark, arguing it doesn’t look like a real orange cat, mainly because it doesn’t feature the classic stripes. One Reddit user, clearly unimpressed, shared that as an orange cat owner, they felt seriously let down by the design, even posting a photo of their own cat to prove the point.

Plenty of fans backed up that complaint, noting that most ginger cats usually have at least some striping, even if it’s subtle. One commenter pointed out they’d never seen an orange cat without some kind of pattern. At the same time, another went further, arguing that all ginger cats have stripes to some degree and calling the design choice unnecessary and “lazy”. Someone else chimed in, saying the Lego model actually looks closer to an orange-and-white tuxedo cat than a classic ginger.

That said, the backlash wasn’t universal. Several fans jumped in to defend Lego’s approach, even sharing photos of real cats that look surprisingly similar to the set. One supporter argued that making the cat fully orange keeps the design clean, while adding stripes could have made it look “rubbish”, calling the final look a fair middle ground. Another orange cat owner admitted they wished it had stripes too, but said they still absolutely loved the set.
